During my 35-year career as a commercial photographer, I had to build sets and environments in order to achieve the illustrative needs of the photographic projects I was working on. Many times the set or environment had to be sculpted, drawn or painted. I took on these tasks personally, and over the years through experimentation learned some of the processes of the two disciplines. I began to do personal projects in sculpture that resulted in commissioned work for corporate clients in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. In 1997, I moved from Chicago to New York City and began making small colored drawing on paper. The decision to work small was two-fold: first was the fact that affordable apartments in Manhattan come in two sizes, small and what most would call a closet. The second is, that affordable apartments in Manhattan come in two sizes, small and what most would call a closet. My choice of crayons and color pencil over some sort of emulsion or colored surface on paper achieved the desired effect of the small drawings having the appearance of painted canvas on a larger scale. Moving to Florida in 2005 and suddenly having more space in which to work, I started to paint on larger surfaces causing some stylistic changes. However the images that I draw or paint continue to come from my own interior landscapes.
